Back in the summer of '85............

I recall heavy thunderstorms in the area causing serious flooding, and seeing a report on WNEW News (5) showing a stranded "E" Train (blue striped 44 or 46) sitting idle in floodwaters that were almost ip to platform level.

That image still remains with me today.....

Fun 'n' games on the "Eye-Are-Tee" (through summer's end)..........

.............heard earlier on 1010 WINS that, until the end of the summer, weekend ervice on the 1, 2, and 3 lines swill be either totally shut down, or partially, so that "essential track work" can be carried out.....

Straphangers are going to be loving this.....(!!)

I noticed that, underground, they replaced their earlier 100 lb. ARA-B rails with something called 100-8 which, though the base and height are the same, there are differing - and more complicated - dimensions of the rail shape, web, etc. I wonder if that's at the heart of some of these problems, along with the "Em-Tee-Yay's" fetish for uber-modernization.

And that's not counting the use of 115 lb. RE rails above ground on the elevated sections.

I also heard on 1010 WINS that a lot of this trackwork concerns "replaci8ng switche sand crossovers".

Odd, when you think of how many switches and crossovers the MTA have eliminated, over the past several decades (like the crossover just south of the 2/3 station at Wall Street), trackage that indeed would be instrumental during times when stalled trains (or signal issues) foul up certain routes.....

While on the subject..............

Think of the MTA not eliminating the lower level track/platform at 42nd Street (IND); this lower level track, IMHO, woiuld have made sense to retain in an active state, to enable downtown trains to bypass congestion/stalled trains, etc, on the upper level..

Yet another example of operational flexibility tossed aside......

Yes, I had of this; to be honest, though, I still cannot fathom the #7 no longer terminating at Times Square, which is how I knew it for so many years.

With the "Redboids" now long gone, and the line all now "See-Bee-Tee-See", the line has since lost so much of its character.....

On this day in 1905,..........

The LIRR placed itsfirst MUs into service, running between Flatbush Avenue and Rockaway Park.

These were the venerable "MP-41s", which, except for the vestibule steps, traps, and large headlights, were identical to the original INTERBOROIGH "Hi-V" Gibbs cars.

These humble, hard-working cars were quite long-lived, lasting into th e1950s.............
