.....when the infamous '77 blackout struck, what were the newest Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" then in service?

I would imagine that MaBSTOA's "El replacement" Fishbowls would bew among the most recent.

With the old veteran "Kramdens" already retired by several years, people in certain areas could not accuse the MTA of saddling them with old, outdated buses.....

The last of " 'stoa's" and "Tee-Yay's" "Dangerfields" (9000-9159 and 9160-9319) had already entered "soivice" a few months before the blackout; the most recent Fishbowls were the T6H-5309A's and express bus 5310A's ordered in 1972 and '73. The so-called "el replacements" also enabled the FACL/ST "Jetsons" to be retired, back in the summer of '73. But when the order came might've preceded the end of the "Toid Aven-yah" el.

The oldest? Well, the last of the '63 " 'stoa" Fishbowls were being phased out of "soivice," by the next year what was left of the 1964 order would be the oldest in that division. Don't know when the 1961 order of 1000's for the "Tee-Yay" were finally retired, but no doubt some of them were still on the roads in those infamous 25 hours when the lights were out that long, hot summer.

Also, by 1977, the stalwart old "Pattons" of "The Little Red Bus That Could" had already been retired; thankfully, "AVENUE B" did not operate in Brooklyn.....

I was not aware of looting in that area, but, given the times, it would not surprise me at all to learn that this area was also "hit" when the lights went out..... Sad

Curious..............

At the time of the '77 blackout, were any of the depots/garages equipped with backup generators, or were they completely "pff lpine" for the duration?

The question is, now, were the buses themselves packed like sardines as was the case in the 1965 blackout with that famed photo of a " 'stoa" bus where the passengers didn't have any room to breathe, let alone . . .

You do have to wonder about what ridership was like on the MTA buses, during the '77 blackout........did most regular riders opt to stay at home, not wantingto try to flag down a bus on a dark street, where anything could be lurking in the blackness?

Or, did they simply jam the buses, with the subways OOS?

Don't forget, the "Thoid Aven-ih"El"was but a memory in '77, being gone for four uears, already......

It wasn't just the "Arnines," then - the entire "Toid Aven-yah" el, having been decommissioned and set for demolition, also avoided destruction at the hands of looters . . .
