The H&M begins full-time service between Hoboken (DL&W) and Exchangd Placw (PRR); service to Hudson Terminal will begin on July 19th/

Also on this day in 1909, the first section of the H&M's ERIE station (later Pavonia-Newport) opens............

This rare photo appears to atew to 1909.

Note the original signals; also,the "A" Class cars were the only H&M cars to feature deck roofs.

Mote, also,,that the, the advertising posters have still not been displayed in ther frames............

I was thinking the SAME thing; and, ironically, when the first section of the "Eye-Are-Tee" opened in 1904, many thought that the ad posters were "unsightly", and "marred the beauty" of the new stations?

Indeed, tastes DO change,over the years.....

Also......

in that 1909 "Aitch & Em" photo, regarding the ceiling-mounted signals. that fateful morning of 9/11, Your's Truly clearly recalls the small H&M-era "dwarf" signals which still in use, suspended from the ceiling at Hoboken, on each of the three tracks.

I am sure they are now long, long gone.....

Note the "dwarf" signal just slightly to the left of "Black" car #55; these are what I remember at the Hoboken terminal, suspended from the ceiling........

In my collection, I have an H&M rulebook from 1923; there are several pages showing signals/aspects.

The ceiling-mounted signals seen in the 1909 Exchane P;ace photo were designated:

"ILLUMINATED INTERLOCKING SIGNA:S"

Storm aftermath (NJT)............

Again, the NJT rail network was CLOBBERED by the wild weather........

Raritan Valley line TOTALLY shut down.

Extensive partial service outages on the M&E, Pascack Valley, and Booton lines (heard nothing so far on the NJCL)

Downed trees and wires, washouts, debris on tracks, signalissues etc.......

Odd, indeed...........

......with this latest intense "meltdown"(weather-wise) there have been, surprisingly, no major power issues on the subways, and w e have not heard from "Mr. Jan-OH!" on "aging power facilities" causing major disruptions.

Interestingly, seems that the "R-211s" have been weathering the heat and humidity quite well..................

Last might an NJT train was stalled (no lights, no a/c) and the parboiled passengers had to wait TWO HOURS for a relief diesl to show up(!!)

Perhaps the newfangled "R-211s" have now "adapted" to the hot and humid "NooYawk"summers,and this could be the reason for their recent overall good performance, as of late

Also, I'm sure it didn't "hoit" the three variants of R-211 that Bombardier was NOT amongst the manufacturers - and it was a lot of THEIR built cars that had a LOT of "teething problems."

Again, I do not think that ANYONE ever imagined the SIRT "R-44s/"ME-2s" to last over 50 YEARS in service....now, that kind of longevity speaks MANY volumes!

And the now-classic "Brighton Belles" are now coming upon their 40th service year......
