The iconic TSQ-GC shuttle opens.
Due to severe overcrowding, the new line was temporarily closed just a few days later.....;service did not resume until later in September......

Astor Place fire (Tuesday)..............
In the wee hours, according to 1010 WINS, a vaccum train caught fire at the Astor Place IRT station, filling the station withacrid smoke.
Several firefighters and civilians were injured, thankfully, none serious.
Service is back with major delays.
That this fire tookplace at Astor Place isa but ironic; recall the serious flooding that took place at this station in 1956, during the massive Wannamaker blaze, that also flooded the BMT's 8th Street station.
A bit ironic,i ndeed.....

The "Brightliners", indeed,eventually became subway legends, regarding thier noteworthy service lifespan.
None of today's "Rolling iPads will even come within several light-years of being in "soivice" for that lengthy span of time.....heck, they'probably will all be outdated by the time the last "Brighton Belle" R-68s are retired..........

Remember the detailed chapter on this destructive event in Stan Fischler's "UPTOWN,DOWNTOWN" (recall the flooded roadbed buckling under the train of "R-17s", then still the "new kids on the block".......

Multiple numbered and lettered subway lines are undergoing major switch AND signal work this weekend
This, ofcourse, translates to more block signals being trashed, and replaced by 'See-Bee-Tee=See"
No matter, with railfan windows now gone, there's nothing to see, anyway, unlike the old days.........

Hard to fathom that the R-62 "Silverboids" are now in "soivace" for over 40 YEARS!!! 
The LAST "Eye-Are-Tee" cars to have roller curtains.....

At this rate, their run seems to have outlasted every one of the "married pair" SMEE cars turned out for the "Eye-Are-Tee" between 1959 and 1964, no? |

I would agree.
Last I rode on a "Silverboid" was in mid-2004, on the TSQ-GC shuttle, after being retired but a few weeks, after a jaunt to the NYCTM.
In fact, thatwas my last trip into the city; strange knowing that the SMEE era on the IRT was no more.....
