[NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629]

On this day in 1958.....

The first of a fleet of 50 St.Louis-built air-conditioned rapid transit cars enter service on the PRR/H&M " oint service "between Newark nd Hudson Terminal.

THe PRR cars were designated "MP=52s", while the H&M-owned cars were designated "K"=class cars.

The4se cars replaced the old "Red McAdoo" MP-38s, the oldest of which dated back to 1911.

On this day in 2009 ,the first of PATH's new "PA-5" cars entered service............

The "K" cars were retired iin 1989; all of these historic cars were scrapped, though there were rumors that ons supposedly one still was intact at the <eadowland shops.

Odd that neither Shore Line or Seashore was interested in these historically-significant cars................

That whole fleet, meanwhile, by bringing A/C to the fore, would put pressure on the "Tee-Yay," especially after a certain "Mr. Linds-ley" began an eight-year run at City Hall. (Not just on the subways, starting with the last 10 R-38's, but also the buses, with the 1967 orders for both "Tee-Yay" and " 'stoa" with their A/C batwing Fishbowls.)

The "tubes" had a fully a/c fleet long before the "Tee-Yay"/"Em-Tee-Ay" came even close.

With the retirement of the "Black" cars in 1965, PATH boasted an enture fleet of ac-equipped cars.

That the "tubes" was operating the "joint service" with the mighty PTR, I am sure, helped speed up the purchase of an all-new a/c fleet for the Newark service in 1958............

Here is a good photo (1964) of PATH's "Blue Train", made upof modernized "Black" cars at the old Henderson yards;

Note the car on the right with the blocked-off vestibule door with vents; this was where an experimental a/c unit was installed.

Also, note that the doors of the car opposite sports new doors that echo those on the "K" cars.

I well remember this interestung train; Mom and I rode it several times, and I also remember seeing it at JSQ..........

In this nostalgic "now it's all gone" photo fron c.1964, we see the "Blue Train"laying over at Hournal Square(we are looking west)

Faintly, you can also just make oiut a NHBL Old Look up above, patiently awaiting the starter's bell, to start its lengthy northbound run up he "Boulevard".........how well I remember such timeless scenes.....it's all so long ago, now......

The old "rapid transit" cars had character. Today's equipment don't even remotely spark any inspiration.

As a lad, Mom and I often lunched at the Nedicks near the shuttle at TSQ ;the drinking in the delicious aromas of great hot dogs,minfling with the hot,oily smell of the shuttle trains themselves......ahh, bliss!

Into at least the mid-80s, there was a great little "tale oit"/snack bar in the mezzanibe of the BMT station at Broad Street; this wa s VERY popular with a lot of the NYSE gang, right next door (OUTSTANDING hot chocilate!) r

In the LURR concourse at Penn ,my late pal from Ronkonkoma and I used to frequent Rose's quite oftem, for a few hot slices, many tears bax.

What weall took for granted...............

On this day in 1963.......

A westbound PRR/PATH "joint service" train collided with a PRR switcher near Harrison; there were, sadly, several deathss and numerous injuries.

Three of the "MP-52s" were also damaged beyond repair.................

After this tragic accident, I've read that cab signals were installed in three PATH "K"cars, to replace the PRR-owned "MP-52s" destroyed in aforementioned accident.......
